Learn what gold karat means and how to read 14K, 18K and 24K material descriptions.

What does karat measure?

Gold karat expresses purity in 24 parts. 14K is about 58.3% gold, 18K is 75%, and 24K describes gold close to pure. This number does not grade gemstones or craftsmanship. Check whether the stated karat applies to the whole piece or only to an accent.

Why can colour and wear differ?

Alloying metals influence colour and hardness. Two pieces with the same karat can look different because their alloys and finishes differ. Near-pure gold is softer; suitability for daily wear also depends on design, thickness and construction.

Questions before buying

Look for separate descriptions of the base metal, gold accents and any plating. “Gold coloured” is not a purity mark. Read hallmarks, materials, gemstones and care notes together. For mixed-metal designs, ask which component uses which metal.
